The neigbourhood

The Plantage- Weesper neighborhood is a lively area in the center of Amsterdam. It offers many restaurants, is close to the UVA University of Amsterdam and Artis Zoo. The neighborhood is not overcrowded like some parts of the center and is still on walking distance to main attractions like Artis Zoo, Tropenmuseum, Theater Carré, Portuguese Synagoge and Albert Cuyp and Dapper markets. Opposite the Spinoza Suites you can rent electric boats to explore the canals and be your own captain. Also ticket offices are nearby to buy tickets for the main attractions.

Getting around

Tram and metro are situated at 5 minutes walking distance. Guests can easily walk to the busy shopping streets in the centre in 10 minutes or take the underground to central station, which will take about 5 minutes. We advise bike rental at the end of our street or rent a boat just opposite the canal Spinoza Suites is facing.

History

The mansion that houses Spinoza Suites was built in 1873 by Dutch architect H. Overeem as a family residence, in the Plantage/Weesperbuurt neighborhood. This area was enclosed by the city walls in 1663, but it took almost 200 years before it was built, making it the only 19th century urban development inside the city center. As a part of the formerly Jewish quarter, the second world war has left some deep scars in the area.
